asma ali
designer
MArch, BEDS
Asma was born in the farming town of Arbaji, Sudan, and spent a childhood split between the quiet of Pickering, Ontario and the rapidly growing city of Doha, Qatar. With art and design having always been at the centre of her interest, she began her pursuit of an architecture career in Dubai, UAE before moving to Halifax to complete her studies at the Dalhousie School of Architecture. There, she obtained her Bachelors of Environmental Design and graduated with a Master of Architecture degree in 2023 after completing a thesis that explored the cyclical connection between architecture, agriculture, and ecology in traditional Sudanese ways of cultivating and making, and the positive potential of bringing some of these practices back.
During her studies, Asma completed a summer apprenticeship with Technocon Engineering Group in Khartoum, Sudan, as well as work terms with Acre Architects and Abbott Brown in Halifax. Post-graduation she went on to work with Calgary firm; Formed Alliance Architecture Studio, before moving back to Halifax to join the Peter Braithwaite Studio team as a designer.
In her time at PBS, she’s gaining a more well-rounded knowledge of design, learning from the vast and varied experiences of the carpenters, designers and architects that make up the studio team.
